Disease

Water-borne diseases are common and so Typhoid, Dysentery, Worms and Cholera are seen regularly. Malaria is still the biggest killer in the area and this frequently results in severe anaemia especially in young children.

The death rate is high with only 3 in 4 children reaching the ages of 5 years.

HIV / AIDS is now almost at epidemic levels with the women and children bearing the brunt of the suffering. It is estimated that up to 30% of the population is suffering from this disease and this is causing enormous health problems for everyone.

TB is rapidly increasing and as the general health of the population decreases more and more women and children are being affected.

In recent times the hospital has been able to offer treatment to affected mothers and their new born babies as part of the 'Mother to Child Transmission Programme' which is a new initiative to restrict the spread of HIV from affected mothers to their babies.
